About Plovdiv |

Plovdiv is one of the oldest towns not just in Bulgaria, but also in whole Europe. This is the second largest city in Bulgaria, after Sofia. It is situated in the western part of the Gorno Thracian lowland, on the two banks of the biggest river in Bulgaria- Maritsa and on top of six unique syenite hills- “tepeta”. Layers of cultural treasures from prehistoric, Thracian, roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and revival periods can be found in the region. Today Plovdiv is a modern city with fast developing business centre. Many new administrative buildings and trade centres and numerous companies and enterprises have offices in the city. |

Due to its good location, near the famous Bulgarian ski resorts Bansko and Pamporovo, the airport is mainly active during the winter season. The main traffic is charters to and from the United Kingdom, Ireland and Russia. The airport also plays a vital role in case of emergencies and is sometimes used as a substitute for Sofia Airport, which is almost 150 km away or 1.5 hour drive on the Trakiya motorway. |

It was established in August 1892 as an industrial and agricultural show. The modern International Fair Plovdiv is situated in a large-scale exhibition complex of 360,000 m², of which 95,000 m² exhibition area (and 60,000 m² indoor). The fair disposes of 24 multifunctional pavilions and has the largest ground in Southeastern Europe. Some 40 shows are held a year, in which 7,000 exhibitors from 58 countries participate. |

Another very interesting museum town to visit is the old town of Plovdiv. Plovdiv is the cultural and artistic capital of southern Bulgaria. Its antique part is situated on three hills. Influences of European architectural styles can be noticed in almost every building and house. Here the Antiquity and Renaissance are combined in one. There are remains of ancient settlements, fortified walls, towers, underground passages. One of the most interesting landmarks is the Amphitheatre, which is restored and today is used as an open scene for different cultural activities. The Renaissance houses provide another landmark.They are characteristic with luxuriant inner and outer architecture - the work of the Bulgarian masters from the end of 19th century. You can visit Chifte Banya Bath, Djumaya mosque; see the clock tower on Sahat hill and many churches, connected with different periods of the Bulgarian history.
